Devised by British Army Captain George Hope Verney in the 19th century. The board is a cross shape: an 8x8 centre with a three-square-wide arm extending from each side. Four players sit North, East, South, and West, each with a full standard chess army (King, Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 8 Pawns). Turns proceed clockwise (N→E→S→W). Players sitting opposite each other (North+South, East+West) are partners on the same team. There's no castling and no initial two-square pawn advance. A pawn promotes to a Queen upon reaching the far edge of the board. A team wins once both of its opponents have been checkmated (left with no legal move) — an eliminated player's pieces simply remain on the board as obstacles. (One historical nuance not implemented here: pawns that would reach a partner's home row are traditionally said to reverse direction rather than promote there — this version simply promotes any pawn that reaches the board's outer edge.)
