A regional variant played in northern India in the 19th century, recorded in H.J.R. Murray's History of Chess, Chapter IV. The pieces have different names but move almost exactly as in international chess — an Elephant (Rook) in each corner, then a Horse (Knight), then a Camel (Bishop), with the Minister (Queen) and King in the centre. Pawns move only one square forward and capture one square diagonally forward; there is no initial two-square step and no en passant. The King has a one-time special power: at any point in the game — provided it has never yet been checked — it may leap once like a knight. Promotion is intricate: a pawn reaching the back rank may only promote to the piece that originally occupied that file (a Rook-file pawn to Rook, a Knight-file pawn to Knight, and so on; either central file promotes to Minister/Queen) — and only if that side has already lost one of that piece type. If no eligible promotion is currently available, the pawn is simply stuck on the seventh rank and cannot move at all (shown with a red outline on the board). Checkmate wins.
