スウェーデン王グスタフ3世（1746–1792）が愛好したとされるバリアント。通常の8x8盤に加え、盤の四隅の外側斜め方向にのみ、それぞれ1マスの特別な「出丸」が存在する（ルークやポーンはそこへ直進できず、ビショップ・クイーン・ナイト・アマゾンだけが到達できる）。両陣営とも、自陣に近い2つの出丸に「アマゾン（将軍副官）」を1体ずつ配置してゲームを始める。アマゾンはクイーンとナイトを合わせた動きを持つ最強の駒で、単独でも敵キングを詰ませられるほどの威力を持つ。ポーンはアマゾンにも昇格できる。それ以外のルールは通常のチェスと同じ。
A variant said to have been favoured by King Gustav III of Sweden (1746–1792). Alongside the normal 8x8 board, each of the four corners has one extra square attached only diagonally, outside the board — rooks and pawns can never reach it directly, but bishops, queens, knights, and Amazons can. Each side begins with one Amazon (General-Adjutant) on each of the two corner squares nearest its own back rank. The Amazon combines the moves of a queen and a knight, making it the most powerful piece in the game — strong enough to checkmate a bare king unassisted. Pawns may promote to an Amazon as well as the usual pieces. All other rules follow standard chess.
