A 12×12 medieval chess variant recorded in 1283 in Alfonso X of Castile's Libro de los juegos, featuring fantastical pieces — lion, unicorn, giraffe, crocodile, and the roc-like aanca. A pawn reaching the far rank promotes to whichever piece originally stood on that file (the king's file is the exception: it promotes to an Aanca instead). Following the older Shatranj tradition this game descends from, being stalemated is a loss, just like checkmate.
