A four-player variant said to originate in 18th-century Russia. The 192-square board has a large open battlefield plus four 4x4 "fortress" rooms in the corners, each connected to the battlefield by exactly one "gate" square — every other point along that boundary is a solid wall that blocks all movement, including a Knight's jump. Each of the four players (North, East, South, West) sets up a full 16-piece army on the battlefield as normal, plus one extra Rook, Bishop, and Knight garrisoned inside their own fortress (no historical diagram of the exact fortress arrangement was available in the sources consulted, so these three are auto-placed along the fortress's back wall here). Turns proceed clockwise; players sitting opposite each other (North+South, East+West) are partners. There's no castling; pawns may still advance two squares on their first move, and promote upon reaching the board's outer edge. A team wins once both opponents have been checkmated.
